Gratitude was expressed through words, music, handshakes and hugs at John Jay High School’s Field of Honor today.
The annual event, organized by the high school’s JJ4Vets club, was held on John Jay’s front lawn, against the backdrop of fifty American flags standing in formation, and the stirring sounds of the school’s Wind Ensemble. It brought together veterans, students and staff to honor the sacrifices that members of the armed forces have made in service to our nation.
“We all owe an enormous amount of gratitude to the veterans present today and around America,” said Dylan Cooper, co-president of JJ4Vets.
“Today is our day to thank you,” said co-president Will Civetta. He nodded towards the row of local honorees.
The veterans present including his grandfather, John Civetta; John Jay’s Principal Steven Siciliano; the school’s security greeter Henry Neil; Katonah-Lewisboro’s School Resource Officer Brett Schlosser; Lewisboro Veterans Advisory Committee member Mark Vibert, Chair of Bedford’s Veterans Advisory Committee, Clark Petschek; and Bill Breedy.
In his remarks, Dr. Siciliano highlighted American leadership, vitality and sense of optimism. “We are not a nation in decline,” he said.
He thanked both veterans, and their families, for defending American and her ideals.
"This was my first experience at the Field of Honor ceremony, and it was powerful to witness our students come together with empathy and gratitude to pay tribute to the brave veterans who served in our armed services," said Supintendent Ray Blanch.
John Jay’s Wind Ensemble, conducted by band teacher Jared Henderson, opened with “The Star-Spangled Banner.” They closed with “The Gallant Seventh,” a march composed by John Philip Sousa.
Before raising his baton, conductor Henderson turned to address the veterans. “Introducing my students to this music is a special part of what I do here,” he told the visitors. “It’s an honor to play for you. Thank you.”
